Dublin retain title with victory over Cavan

Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Cup Final 2013
Dublin 0-14 Cavan 1-5
Dublin retained the Gerry Reilly Cup with their victory over Cavan in the final of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT played in Oldcastle on Sunday evening (25 August 2013) in ideal conditions. The large crowd present were treated to some great football from both sides and the future looks bright for both sides.
Cavan had the first chance to score but shot wide from a resulting 45. Dublin’s Jon Kindlon got the opening point of the game. Cavan responded with a point from Peter Corrigan after a scramble in the Dublin goalmouth. A Sean Caffrey free edged Dublin ahead before Shane Moynagh got Cavan’s second point after a great pass from Killian Maguire. Sean Moynagh found the Dublin net after great work by Daire McEnroe to give Cavan the lead by a goal.
Dublin then had their best period of the first half with 5 unanswered points from Brian Howard, Sean Caffrey(f), Cathal Doran, Sean Caffrey and Darren Byrne to lead by 2 points. A Darragh Gannon free reduced the arrears to a single point. Diare McEnroe’s attempt on goal was blocked by Dublin’s ‘keeper,Jack Carey out for a 45. in the 24th minute a daire McEnroe converted free had the sides level again. Catahl Doran got the final score of the half to lead by the minimum at the break. Cavan had then got 2 scoring chances , but were off target on both occasions.

H/T: Dublin 0-8 Cavan 1-4
On the first half display it looked like the game was going to go down to the wire, but Dublin seemed to have moved up a gear and added 3 points to their tally by the 40th minute without reply.
Cavan had a great chance to reduce the gap between the sides when they were awarded a penalty, however Killian Maguire’s kick was easily saved by the Dublin ‘keeper.
Dublin substitute, Darragh Dixon responded with a point which extended Dublin’s lead to 4 points. A David Brady converted free turned out to be Cavan’s only score of the second half. They had chances from frees, but failed to convert them. Dublin on the other hand were creating chances and showed great speed adding 3 points to their tally before the final whistle.
Overall Dublin deserved their victory and especially with their second half performance. Credit has to be given to Cavan for putting up a great fight and never gave up.

Dublin’s Cathal Doran received the ‘Man of the match’ award.

Gerry Reilly U-16 FT 2013 Plate Final

Meath 2-25 Louth 1-5
Meath started strongly from the start of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Plate Final played in Oldcastle on Sunday evening and gave Louth very little chance of getting into the game.
Meath had registered 7 unanswered points before Louth got their opening score in the 12th minute. Brian Conlon got the opening score for Meath. This was followed up by points from Thomas O’Reilly (f), Padraig McGowan, Thomas O’Reilly (2f), then a great point from James McKewon after a pass from Padraig McGowan and another from Ronan Ryan.
In this period Louth were under tremendous pressure and the ball remained in their half of the field. Tadgh McEnaney pointed from a free to reduce the gap to 5 points. However Meath pulled away again by adding a further 5 points to their tally before Tadgh McEnaney pointed from a free just before the break.
H/T: Meath 0-12 Louth 0-3
The large crowd present were hoping that Louth would make a game of it in the second half, but this never materialised as Meath continued to dominate proceedings. Meath added 6 points to their score before Thomas O’Reilly got Meath’s first goal.
Meath were leading by 1-20 to 0-3 when Louth’s Kevin Carr got a goal. Louth followed up with points from Aaron O’Brien and Tadgh McEnaney, which turned out to be their final scores.
Meath continued to be in top all over the field and added a further 1-4 (including a Daniel Forde goal) to their tally before the final whistle. 11 Meath players got on the score sheet which illustrated their dominance in the game.

Gerry Reilly U-16 FT 2013 Shield Final

Westmeath 4-8 Wicklow 3-5
Westmeath completely dominated the opening half of the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT 2013 Shield Final played early on Sunday evening in Oldcastle. Wicklow seemed to have no answer to all the pressure from Westmeath and never got out of the stating blocks. Nobody present could have then predicted what was to unfold in the second half.
Ronan O’Toole opened the scoring for Westmeath with a point. Niall Gavin and Ciaran Doyle followed up with further points. The Wicklow ‘keeper blocked a shot on goal, but Niall Gavin pointed from the rebound. A Bill Berry goal had Westmeath in the driving seat. Wicklow had a shot on goal blocked for a 45 but failed to convert the resultant kick. Cathal Daly got Westmeath’s second goal after a pass from Ciaran Doyle before Wicklow’s first score in the 18th minute, a Martin Shannon point. But then Ronan O’Toole got a point and 2 goals to give Westmeath a seemingly unassailable lead at the break.
H/T: Westmeath 4-6 Wicklow 0-1
You hear about a game of 2 halves especially if there is a gale blowing. No wind worth talking about, but what we got in the second half was dominance this time by Wicklow. Whatever was said in the dressing room at half time transformed Wicklow. On the restart the post and crossbar came to the rescue of Westmeath from a Wicklow goal attempt. Wicklow got 3 unanswered points from Alan Dillon, Liam Kinsella and Conor Ryan before Westmeath’s only scores of the second half. (a Ciaran Doyle pointed free and a Ronan O’Toole point).
The saviour of Westmeath, especially in the second half, was their Minor ‘keeper, Joseph Hyland, who made no less than 5 terrific saves on Wicklow’s attempts on goal. The pressure was all coming from Wicklow and they got their first real break when Conor Ryan converted a penalty. Joseph Hyland then had to make one of his great saves before Conor Kenny got Wicklow’s second goal. Martin Shannon added to Wicklow’s score with a point before Roan Lynch got their third goal.
While the scoreline indicates a comfortable win for Westmeath, nothing could be further from the truth. Nobody could have anticipated their collapse in the second half and credit has to go to Wicklow from making a great game of it then.
No doubt Wicklow will remember the name of Joseph Hyland (who was presented with the ‘Man of the match’ award) and who thwarted their comeback efforts.

After the match, Westmeath’s Captain, Darragh Healy, was presented with the Gerry Reilly U-16 FT Shied Trophy by Clare Reilly (mother of Gerry Reilly)
